This is my "renaissance" series, the first product of a new generation of stochastic composing algorithms. I wanted to reinvigorate the field of the one-part ATW using good methods and modern music. To do this I chose a simple, classic "no-duffers" calling from my series 2 Bristol peals — the 5056 no.1 — and added methods one at a time to build a series to 10-spliced. At each step I looked for well-known methods that added music, elegance, interest and variety. The resulting compositions are I hope all worth ringing, and are generally close to, or in some cases exceed, the music present in the original single-method peal.
In the (likely vain!) hope that the chosen methods would be rung more frequently, and perhaps begin to displace the Standard 8, I also composed a parallel series of 3-part non-ATW peals. These should be more accessible for the conductor. In contrast to the one-part series, I started at 3-spliced, and adopted different bob callings in order to maximise the music at each level. The compositions have music counts which are competitive with the one-parts, although with the balance tilted towards the back-bell rollups.
In 1947 Albert Pitman published the first of a sequence of ground-breaking Spliced Surprise Major compositions, which set the standard for the best part of a century. I hope that this new series will reset that standard for the 21st century.
Methods are, in order of introduction: Bristol, Deva, Cornwall, Lessness, Malpas, Superlative, Adelaide, Yorkshire, Glasgow and Venusium.
Peals contain the music (listed as 5678+8765 runs / 6578 rollups / LB4 runs), COM and method balance shown below each column. Every peal in the series is ATW. Where a calling line ends with a "." but the course does not contain a Home, the course end is not rung.
